Questions to ask before hiring help after hospital discharge
The first question is not "Do we need care forever?" It is "What help is needed to get through the first days home safely?"
Care duties and fit
- Can the caregiver help with bathing, transfers, meals, transportation, and medication reminders?
- What tasks are not allowed?
- Can they follow the discharge instructions and complete a daily care log?
- Can coverage be increased or reduced after the first week?
Training and safety
- How are falls, confusion, medication issues, or urgent symptoms handled?
- Who supervises the caregiver?
- What happens if the caregiver is late, sick, or not a fit?
- How quickly can the agency respond if the discharge plan changes?
Communication and costs
- Will the caregiver complete a daily log?
- How are family updates shared?
- What is the hourly rate, minimum shift, weekend rate, and cancellation policy?
